Understanding Boating Crimes
Tennessee is an inland state where boating is extremely popular. In 2007, Tennessee was the second highest ranked state for having the most registered boats of any other inland state with 274,914 registered recreational vessels. With these many boats there are many different laws and ordinances in place in order to maintain the safety of various sailors and other vessels on the lakes and rivers of Tennessee.
Some of the various boat crimes that can be committed may include the following:
- BUI (boating under the influence)
- Boating implied consent violation
- Child endangerment
BUI is very similar to DUI in that if you are operating a vessel while your BAC (blood alcohol content) is 0.08% or greater then you will be arrested and charged with BUI. The penalties for conviction of this crime may include jail time of up to 11 months and 29 days, and fines up to $5,000 depending on various circumstances surrounding the arrest. Implied consent violation would be a refusal to take a chemical test in order to determine BAC.
This crime is an automatic suspension of vessel operating privileges for six months. Child endangerment may refer to any crime committed in a boat with a child under the age of 18 on-board. The penalties for this crime may range greatly depending on the crime, you could face 30 days in jail and fines of $1,000 or much greater. Mr. Bowlin represented me on an assault charge. My bond conditions wouldn't allow me to go home to my husband and children. The day after my arrest, on a Sunday, Troy met with me and my family to discuss my unfortunate arrest. The very next morning Mr. Bowlin was able to get my bond conditions lifted allowing me to go home to my family. His office went above and beyond the call of duty which resulted in a dismissal of my charge.- Former Client
